Flood Risk and Drainage Studies in Albania

STREAM Sh.p.k. provides hydrological and hydraulic studies for flood-risk assessment and drainage planning in Albania. The work supports decisions about development sites, infrastructure, river corridors and catchment management.

What can a flood or drainage study include?

  • Review of historical floods, rainfall, streamflow, terrain and existing infrastructure.
  • Catchment delineation, rainfall-runoff analysis and design-flow estimation.
  • Hydraulic modelling of water levels, flow paths, velocities and inundation where the available survey data support it.
  • Comparison of existing conditions and proposed interventions, including culverts, channels, storage and nature-based measures.
  • Maps, technical reporting and a record of assumptions, uncertainty and model limitations.

What information is needed?

Provide the site boundary and coordinates, the decision the study must support, available topographic survey or terrain model, drainage layouts, historical flood observations, rainfall and river records, and the requested design scenarios. Survey needs and permissions are defined at inception.

How are scenarios and uncertainty handled?

Return periods, boundary conditions, climate allowances and assessment criteria must be agreed for the assignment. STREAM documents data quality, calibration evidence where available, and sensitivity to uncertain parameters. A model result depends on its inputs and should be interpreted with the report.

What will the client receive?

The proposal defines the agreed report, maps, model files, design inputs and review process. Statutory approvals, detailed structural design and additional surveys are included only when expressly agreed.

What experience supports this work?

Founder Dr.-Ing. Klodian Zaimi’s prior professional work includes flood-risk planning for five Albanian rivers and Drin-Buna basin modelling. Those assignments predate STREAM’s establishment in January 2025.
