STREAM Sh.p.k. provides plant-specific hydrological and energy forecasting services for hydropower producers, asset managers and electricity traders in Albania and the Western Balkans.

The service connects meteorological forecasts, catchment response and plant characteristics to estimates of expected river inflow and electricity generation. Forecasts support day-ahead planning and short-term operational decisions, with the scope configured around each installation and its available data.

What can a hydropower forecast provide?

  • Day-ahead estimates of average power in MW and energy in MWh for agreed delivery periods.
  • River-flow and reservoir-inflow forecasts.
  • Short-term outlooks extending up to 10 days where model coverage and input data support them.
  • Consideration of reservoir storage, turbine characteristics and operating constraints.
  • Forecast comparison with observed generation and documented performance review.
  • Agreed outputs in Excel, CSV or technical reporting formats.

The forecast horizon, issuance time, update frequency and delivery arrangement are defined for each engagement. Technical feasibility and forecast performance depend on available observations, generation history and plant operating information.

How does STREAM develop the forecast?

STREAM combines available precipitation and temperature forecasts with hydrological observations and catchment modelling. Expected flows are assessed alongside plant characteristics, including effective head, turbine performance and operating restrictions, to estimate generation.

Where historical records are adequate, calibration and back-testing can assess forecast performance before a regular delivery arrangement begins. Subsequent comparison with observed generation supports model review and improvement.

What information is needed to assess a plant?

An initial assessment normally uses the plant location, installed capacity, turbine characteristics, historical generation, available river-flow or water-level records, and reservoir and operating information where relevant.

STREAM reviews the available records and proposes a suitable technical scope. Run-of-river, reservoir and cascade installations require different data and operating assumptions, which are agreed with the operator.

How can the service support electricity-market planning?

Expected production in MW and MWh provides technical inputs for preparing generation volumes and assessing weather-driven uncertainty in day-ahead planning, including for clients participating in ALPEX. Delivery timing and file formats are agreed with the client to suit its workflow.

STREAM provides technical forecasting inputs. Commercial trading, market submissions and operating decisions remain with the client or its authorised representative.

Questions before requesting a forecast

Can a plant with limited historical records be assessed?

STREAM can review the available plant, catchment and operating information to identify a feasible starting scope. Limited observations affect calibration and performance assessment; additional data or monitoring may be needed before a regular forecast arrangement can be proposed.

How is the service priced?

A proposal considers the number and type of plants, available records, modelling work, forecast horizon, update frequency and delivery requirements. Contact STREAM for a project-specific scope and quotation.
